Tuohinen Hammock

The Tuohinen Product Family is a collaborative project by Riku Toivonen and Mikko Lanne, presented in our bachelor’s thesis. The product family, inspired by an experimental upholstery weaving technique, includes three prototypes: a sofa, tatami modules, and a hammock.

Tuohinen sofa

Tuohinen sofa is the second prototype in a larger product family designed for both home and working environments. The inspiration for this project comes from the traditional technique of weaving bark, but instead of bark, we weave pillow tubes. Large hammocks, sofas, lounge chairs, and lounge mats can be created by knitting together various colored tubes. The colors and fabrics can be selected to suit different purposes.

Tuohinen hammock

Tuohinen hammock designed for public spaces is the third component of our thesis. While developing this flexible hanging element, we encountered challenges different from those faced in the previous processes. The hammock stands apart from the other products in the family due to its large size, larger grid dimensions, and unique technical solutions. The pillow tubes are attached to the bottom fabric using straps and fabric stickers. Colors and fabrics can be selected to suit different purposes

Tatami modules are designed for relaxation in working and studying environments. The tatami modules are lightweight, easy to carry, and quick to connect. After use, the modules can be stored by placing them on the wall, where they also function as acoustic elements. As with the other products in the family, colors and fabrics can be selected to suit different purposes.
